The Center for Statistical Science  is a hybrid organization that integrates both real and virtual environments, where researchers from diverse fields collaboratively tackle qualitative and quantitative data analysis challenges. Grounded in statistical science, we actively incorporate methods from AI, machine learning, and mathematical sciences, while also drawing on domain-specific expertise and issues from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Our mission is to advance cutting-edge, integrated education and research in statistical science.

Center Name Center for Statistical Science
Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University
Year Established Established on 1st, April, 2024
Location 6-3-09 Aoba, Aramaki-aza, Aoba-ku, Sendai, 980-8579, Japan
Tel: +81-22-795-4636 Fax. +81-22-795-4654
Mission In response to the qualitative and quantitative analysis that researchers in various fields and data analysis sites have, we will develop a comprehensive type of education and research that challenges problem-solving by collaborating and integrating AI, machine learning, computer science, and domain knowledge in each field of natural and social sciences based on statistical science.
Vision Through the activities of the Center, we aim to develop into a core research center for statistical science, which brings together a wide range of researchers related to statistical science and information science, corporate developers, and professional analysts from inside and outside the university, as well as in Japan and overseas, and conducts research and education that attracts attention from around the world.
Background of Establishment Background for establishment of Center of Statisitcal Science

Tohoku University has set forth "development of data-driven research and open science" in its Vision 2030 (updated version) "Connected University Strategy," and in recent years has been developing a number of initiatives to promote the advancement of education and research in data science. Statistical science plays a key role in the foundation and core of data science. Although statistical science researchers at Tohoku University have achieved great results in a wide variety of fields, however, the problem of "statistical science at Tohoku University" is that the full picture of human resources and research results, and organzaitonal activities are not clear to the public. Under these university policies and issues, the Graduate School of Information Sciences has a large number of cutting-edge researchers related to data science in the fields of natural and social sciences, and is actively engaged in education and research activities. Taking advantage of the strengths of information science, we planned to establish the Research Center for Statistical Science, a place for research and education in which statistical science collaborates with information science.
